This will be another of those light-hearted posts, where I just empty my head of something. This one is a theory, which I’m sure that nobody will agree with me. But, I think the perfect temperature is right around 45 degrees. I’m pretty certain I want it at 45 degrees all year round. I think I would love it. It’s a strange position to have. But, I’ll explain.
You can also start to layer with your clothing choices. Sweaters, vests, collared shirts, blazers, cardigans, are all on offer when it’s 45 degrees out. If you enjoy outdoor jogging, hiking, canoeing, or soccer, its great weather for all those as well. You can also walk around pretty comfortably at 45 degrees. I was lucky enough to visit London a couple years back. Temperatures stayed right at my magic number and I got away with a blazer and scarf the whole time (this is from my London trip, aren’t I looking WAY comfortable???). Basically, I feel that nothing is hampered by 45 degrees. You can play all your sports and wear your best duds without any issues. And, last thing, there is no sweating in public at 45 degrees. Just sayin’.
You’re probably wondering about beach going and all. I can tell you, nothing in me wants to go to the beach if I’m not away on vacation. Assume, you’re going to the beach, just for the day. You have to pack up maybe a change of clothes, multiple towels and worry about where you will shower the sand off of you. There is nothing less fun than finding sand in your home, car, shoes, and pants pocket, 2 months after you went to the beach. The whole thing is an overrated experience. Just go while away on vacation, leave the sand hundreds of miles away from your vehicle and home. This works so much better. That concludes my love letter to 45 degrees. I hope I convinced a few of you embrace the Fall season. I probably disturbed more of you.
(Quick footnote: I wrote this post prior to the “60 Minutes” piece that aired on Sunday, November 13th. If you wanted to see the “60 Minutes” piece, you can here. The clip is about 15 minutes. And, it does mention specific members of Congress, some specific trading, and so does the paragraph I linked to in the final paragraph. OK, back to the post.)
Two quick things before we go, I figure I should at least leave you with something you probably didn’t know. If I only wax poetic about a weather temperature, you might feel short-changed. Anyway, did you know that insider trading is actually legal for members of Congress? I kid you not. I’m seldom shocked, but check out this article. Not only did actual members of Congress insider trade. 72 aides, of members from each party, traded shares of companies their bosses oversee. So, there’s another thing to try to make sense of in your head.
Think about if you or your boss was on a committee that governed financial companies. If you knew a rule was coming that would be a win for that industry, it’s legal to purchase stock prior to that law going into effect. It seems that a good chunk of them are taking advantage of this non-law. 46% of all members of Congress are millionaires themselves. The average for the rest of the US is 1%. To be fair, some came into Congress as millionaires. Although, some have seen their net worth jump spectacularly in a struggling economy. If you’re curious about a few specific members and how much some have made, click here. But, the biggest jump was for Democrat Nancy Pelosi. Her net worth jumped from 21.7 million (2009) to 35.2 million (2010). Again, no joke or embellishment needed.
We’ll leave it there for today, check back for tomorrow for the Friday dump (just loads of stuff I couldn’t fit into posts during the week).
See you then,
James
